Why an online novel?

Once upon a time, I wrote two romance novels.  Much to my surprise, both were published.  Now, one major life change and a decade later, I’m trying my hand at a new genre.  Some would call … have called … this novel science fiction.  I tend to think of it as a futuristic novel, but that’s neither here nor there.  The fact is, this is a story about people.  It’s a story about what it means to be alive.  The rest is window dressing.

Putting Why Live? online this way feels risky.  The dire possibilities seem endless.  Suppose I put this novel out on the Internet, and nobody comes to read it?  Or suppose they do read it and hate it?  Or suppose somebody plagiarizes?*

But stories beg to be told.  For me, it all comes down to that.  That’s what writing is all about.  Getting paid for it is nice–all right, it’s very nice–but sharing the story, touching people’s lives, that beats everything.  Is this the best way to tell this particular story?  Search me.  I guess we’ll find out.

Okay, here’s how this adventure is going to work, at least in theory.  Ready?  Here goes ….

Each Sunday evening, I’ll post a new chapter.  That’s it.  That’s the plan.  All you have to do is tune in.

If you like Why Live?, please tell your friends about it.  If you don’t … don’t.

That about covers everything, I think.  Oh, I should tell you I’m currently working on a futuristic (or science fiction) mystery/thriller called Mandy’s Eyes.  I hope to publish that one the old-fashioned way.

Meanwhile, enjoy the story, and God bless ….
